The Power of the Word "Yet"

When you notice yourself not being great at something or failing in some regard, do you have a tendency to immediately think to yourself “I’m not good at this,” or “I’ll never be good at this?” What if you added the word “yet” to the end of these statements? “I’m not good at this…YET,” or “I’m not an expert in this department…YET.”

Just because you aren’t an expert in the kitchen doesn’t mean that you won’t continue to get better at cooking with practice and in time.

Or just because you can’t run a mile in under 10 minutes today doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to run a mile in 8 minutes next month if you keep exercising.

So, in these cases, instead of being angry or frustrated with yourself and telling yourself that you “aren’t good at this” or “never will be,” add “YET” to the edd of the statements.

“I’m not an expert at making healthy dinners…YET.”

“I can’t run a mile in under 10 minutes…YET.”

“I haven’t reached my goal weight…YET.”

“I haven’t found the right person for me…YET.”

This practice helps you train your brain to see possibility in all things rather than get stuck in a self-critical loop. By seeing possibility, you will have a more positive outlook on your life, and you will be encouraging yourself instead of putting yourself down.

I was inspired to create this practice from the Children’s Book entitled, “The Power of Yet.”

Sending you love,
