Plan for Fun

That meeting you don’t want to go to…plan for fun.

The family dinner you dread…plan for fun.

An event you don’t want to attend…plan for fun.

A closet clean-out you are avoiding…plan for fun.

This phrase, “plan for fun,” was introduced to me by my friend Kara. She’s the friend whom I wrote about in my book in the practice about identifying the people who help you expand your perspectives and consciousness. Kara and I are expanders for each other, always offering new ways to see things. I shared with her that I was dreading an upcoming commitment and she said, “plan for fun.” At first it seemed such a stretch, this commitment was certain to not be fun. But I noticed the inner shift I felt just entertaining that it might be fun.

Imagining how something might be fun lightens the burden and shifts our energy.

Last week, I was in an emotional rut with watching world events unfold. Even though I teach people coping tools and strategies every day, the weight of the world just seems to keep getting heavier. Looking for hope, I remembered my conversation with Kara from over a year ago and wrote “plan for fun” on a post-it note and stuck it on my car dash. All week I drove around with the challenge to plan for fun on the way to my destinations.

On my way to exercise, plan for fun.

On my way to a college reunion, plan for fun.

On my way to a speaking engagement, plan for fun.

On my way to a long day of client meetings, plan for fun.

Guess what happened? Every event was more fun than I thought it would be.

It is amazing how seeking a little fun can change an outcome.

The pressure lessened. My mood shifted. The possibilities seemed positive.

Fun became my intention. Stress and dread lifted, replaced by a willingness to relax and have fun.

The world is heavy. There is a lot out of our control. We still have a choice to find the fun in our lives.

Plan for fun with your people.

Plan for fun in your work.

Plan for fun in your days.

Your ability to make something enjoyable can never be taken away from you.

That’s an inside job.

Find the fun this week,
