Thought Tea

It is estimated that about 80,000 thoughts go through our brains each day. Thought research centers such as the Chopra Center continue to try to quantify this number, but current estimations are the busiest of brains have around 80,000 thoughts a day.

Of those 80,000 thoughts, it is estimated that about 80% are negative.

That means we have about 64,000 negative thoughts a day. Our brains work full-time to keep us safe which means they will always tend to default to negativity to warn us of dangers. The good news is that we aren’t as doomed as our brains would want us to believe.

A healthy brain can observe itself having negative thoughts.

A healthy brain can also determine which thoughts to entertain and which thoughts to let pass on by. Well-known mindfulness teacher and Zen Master, Shunryu Suzuki, teaches:

“Allow your thoughts to come and go. Just don’t serve them tea.”

This is such helpful imagery to discern which of your thoughts are worth spending time with. You have the power to select which thoughts deserve your time and attention.

If we have tea with an anxious thought, we are much more likely to loop on that thought throughout our day. If we notice a negative thought and avoid inviting it in for tea, it diffuses and floats away.

Be very selective of which thoughts you invite in for tea this week.

We become the thoughts we spend time with. So, let’s choose wisely.

Having tea with hopeful thoughts today,
