It is Going to Get Better
/Friday night I was at a long farm table dining outside with twelve good humans as we watched the sunset in the Flint Hills of Kanas.
We were commenting on the beauty as the sun touched the earth and my friend, Brad, said, “As Jerry says, ‘just wait, it’s going to get better.’ And he always right. Every time, the sky gets even prettier after the sun goes down.” Brad’s wife, Jill, looked at me and followed with, “Brad quotes Jerry with every sunset.” And I asked, “my Jerry?”
My Jerry is my dad who is a real-deal cowboy at age 85 on a horse most days who has watched many sunsets in the Flint Hills. He is full of life wisdom, but I was awestruck that, as my dear friends watch a sunset, they quote my dad.
Jerry Hedrick is an eternal optimist. His whole life perspective is that it is going to get better. And he would tell you that his life just keeps getting better. He’s had some hard days, but he sees the potential for good ahead every time. I’m so grateful to have inherited this default quality of optimism from him. It sustains me when hope is hard to find.
Just wait, it is going to get better.
So many times in life, this is hard to trust because we aren’t sure how it is going to get better. Our minds tell us that the peak is behind us, but our souls know there is always more beauty ahead.
Keep going. Keep looking. Keep hoping.
If you are in the stage of sleepless nights with a newborn, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you heart is broken right now, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you aren’t sure if you can find another job, just wait, it is going to get better.
If the excitement wears off of a relationship but conversations start to deepen, just wait, it is going to get better.
If your body is injured and recovery is going slow, just wait, it is going to get better.
If your child is headed to kindergarten, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you are facing an empty nest this fall, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you are feeling stuck in life, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you are in a season of sadness and wondering when it will end, just wait, it is going to get better.
If you are stepping into a life more aligned with your truth but not everyone understands, just wait, it is going to get better.
If your faith is expanding into new areas of exploration, just wait, it is going to get better.
Trust that it will get better. Not always in the form we expect or desire, but it might be more beautiful than we can imagine.
Thank you to my friends for soaking up my dad’s wisdom and sharing it back with me on Friday night.
Thank you to my dad for teaching me how to hold on to hope when I need it most.
Just wait,
